NEWS RELEASE
Welsh Announces Campaign for State Representative
Priorities are Government Reform, Fighting Crime, Property Tax Relief,
and
Promoting Economic Opportunity in Allentown
Vowing to push for serious legislative reforms and put Allentown's interests first, Mike Welsh launched his campaign to become the next State Representative from the 132nd Legislative District.
"The public sent a clear message in the last election that it wants an end to business as usual in Harrisburg, but the General Assembly's record on adopting true governmental reform has been disappointing,” Welsh said. “I will push for key reforms that are critical to help restore public trust and confidence in the legislative process.” These priorities include:
· Eliminating Walking Around Money (WAMs) for legislators, or at least making the process completely transparent to the public;
· Requiring legislators to publicly disclose their operating budget and expenses on a yearly basis, including the amount spent on constituent mailings; and
· Passing legislation prohibiting state officials from running for two offices simultaneously.
Welsh believes that not enough has been done to address the growing crime and gang problem in Allentown. "I have seen firsthand the affect of crime in our city. Unless the entire community works together to address this issue, families will continue to flee Allentown and we will not be able to attract enough businesses to grow our economy," Welsh said.
Welsh said his principles as a fiscal conservative who believes in traditional family values will guide his position on other legislative issues. “I look forward to providing detailed plans to address the issues of crime reduction, property tax relief and economic development during the course of the campaign,” he said.
Mike Welsh spent the last twenty years managing a successful business, volunteering in the community, and helping to raise his family in Allentown. He has a degree in Business Management from DeSales University. During his twenty plus years in the insurance business, Mike earned a reputation of integrity and service to his clients. He developed close relationships with hundreds of families in our community, sharing in their dreams, and helping them plan for life’s challenges.
Mike has always given his time to support many volunteer activities in the community, including serving as a youth soccer coach. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Cathedral Choir of St. Catharine of Siena, and is President of the Men of the Cathedral. Mike is also a Republican Committeeman. He lives in Allentown with his wife Nancy, a teacher in Allentown, and their three children.
“Serving as a State Representative should not be a career or a stepping stone to some higher political office,” concluded Welsh. “If elected, I will work to bring true change to our legislative process, and I will never lose focus on putting Allentown’s interests first.”
